What a season, The Vampire Diaries season 6 was right? We saw Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) grow so close, they became new BFFs (who’d ever see that coming). Caroline (Candice Accola) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) ‘finally’ hook up, only for the pair to turn dark-side on us after the heart-wrenching death of Caroline’s mum Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite McIntyre).
Plus the introduction of everyone’s favourite Warlock, or is that a Syphoner (I’m still not sure), Kai (Chris Wood) – who turned into the season’s big bad, the occasional confident and possible love interest for Bonnie, which ultimately means he had to die of course (boo).
It also saw the end of the Gilberts. With little Gilbert, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), leaving Mystic Falls behind to fight vampires, well, elsewhere, and Elena (Nina Dobrev) receiving the cure for her vampirism only to fall victim to a curse that meant so long as Bonnie lives, she stays in a magical coma, the show created a full stop, bookmarking an end of era that saw Elena at the centre of most the show’s central storylines and heavy mythology.
With a series that is seven seasons in, most would assume a natural slowing down and possible wrapping things up in order to bring the series to a close. But with season 7 on the horizon that doesn’t seem so sure. In a conversation with Ian Somerhalder over at POPSUGAR entertainment, the actor who plays notorious bad boy Damon indicates a fresh start for the series. Commenting that “we want to go back to that season one and two type of storytelling where it’s dark and volatile and fun“, indicating that the series will no longer will be “bogged down with mythology“.
This certainly reflects what show runner Julie Plec stated before the beginning of season 6, where she inferred that the show will be returning to its roots. Which was indicated in season 6’s first half before the convoluted introduction of The Gemini Coven story that strangled the latter half of the season from which it never recovered. Plec also revealed that the season would introduce flash-fowards (a-la Lost style) into the storytelling which means that the post-apocalypse Mystic Falls that we saw a glimpse of at the closing moments to season 6 seems to be the likely candidate for much of the flash-forward content reserving the present for how the characters get to that apocalyptic future.
With the series returning to CW in the fall, it will be interesting to see how the next chapter in the Salvatore brother lives will fair without Elena by their side and the introducing of a story device that could rejuvenate the flagging series or put the final stake in the heart. Daylight rings at the ready.
