It’s hard to meet people. After the social comfort of educational institutions begins to fade; after a heart break or two; after life has taken a twist and a turn, meeting another person, romantically, can be simultaneously a quixotic and debilitating process.
Now, imagine that you are approaching middle age, or maybe you’re already there, and to continue living within the realms of civilisation you must meet, fall in love, and begin a relationship with a complete stranger, or you will be transformed into an animal. You get to choose which animal, of course, but still…
This is the the premise of Greek director, Yorgos Lanthimos‘, first English language feature, The Lobster. Starring Colin Farrell as David, a lonely man harrowed by depression, the film centres on a hostel based community forced to pair up or lose their humanity. After falling for a woman from another such community, an entanglement which is strictly forbidden, David must decide what is truly important in life.

The absurdist premise is pebble-dashed with mannered humour; each shot shot is framed as a stage, much like the work of American auteur Wes Anderson; and a host of talented actors await in the wings for what promises to be a singularly entertaining film.
Yorgos Lanthimos previous explorations into the surreal include Dogtooth and The Alps. The Lobster also stars Rachel Weisz, Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, Ashley Jensen, Ariane Labed, Angeliki Papoulia, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, and Ben Whishaw. The film will will hit UK cinemas on October 16.
