There seems to be a constant buzz around Hellboy 3; never breaking news, just a background level of gossip; as if the internet is attempting to wish it into being by pure will. Star, Ron Perlman, has been especially vocal recently, discussing hazy plans and budget issues. While director, Guillermo del Toro, has half a dozen ongoing projects that seem to drift in and out of production. So don’t get your hopes up too high, but this sneaky little insight into the Hellboy 3 that may be sounds like one hell of a movie.
In a recent interview on Empire magazine’s podcast, Perlman let slip some insights gleaned from del Toro himself. The actor sounds pretty excited about the whole affair:
“Holy s**t, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it. I really feel as though I’m done with the character. I don’t have a burning desire to put that shit on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it”.
Perlman also mentioned his character would at this point have children with Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), who would play a vital part in the coming apocalypse. More rumours, or a step in the right direction? While nothing concrete has been set in motion, let’s hope our big red hero rides again.
