According to The Wrap, Marvel is in negotiations with screenwriter Joe Robert Cole to pen the solo cinematic outing for the Black Panther, currently set for release on July 6, 2018.
The film will star Chadwick Boseman (Get On Up) as the titular hero, who will make his first appearance in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. The character, also known by the alias T’Challa, was notable for being the first African-American superhero to feature in comics. Variety has reported that the film’s story will revolve around T’challa having to take over leadership of the African nation Wakanda after his father is murdered.
Cole hails from the same in-house Marvel writers program as Nicole Perlman, writer of Guardians of the Galaxy. He has previously written and directed the independent drama Amber Lake, and has also worked on the upcoming alien invasion film Revoc. The film is still a long way off, and it may be a while until another prospective director is announced after Selma director Ava DuVernay turned down Marvel’s offer.
