Fans going to see the AC/DC concert at Western Springs Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand on December 15 have been left dumbfounded by the local councils decision to ban alcohol. Not only does the ban cover stadium alcohol consumption, but also in the surrounding area for 24 hours from 6am on the day of the show. The alcohol-restricted area includes nearby streets around both the stadium and the Auckland Zoo, and anyone caught either in possession of or drinking any alcohol will be instantly issued a $250 fine.
The ban is a result of a letter by Police Sergeant Anthony Wilson, who wrote to the council requesting a dry zone on the day of the concert. He stated that similar bans in the past had “significantly assisted in curbing alcohol-related harm and offending in public areas”. A unanimous vote by Waitemeta Local Board followed, with chairman Shale Chambers stating that there was enough evidence to justify a ban. So after hearing this news, I wonder if AC/DC will still include “Have A Drink On Me” in the set-list?!
