It’s an acronym not as well known as the BAFTA’s, but the 18th annual B.I.F.A’s (British Independent Film Awards) took place on December 6. Sponsored by Moet, the event was hosted by actor and director Richard Ayoade aka Moss from CH4’s The IT Crowd – who won the Best Screenplay BIFA himself in 2011 for Submarine.
This year’s big winner was Ex Machina, which picked up 4 awards: Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Alex Garland, as well as the Outstanding Achievement in Craft award for its Visual Effects by Andrew Whitehurst. Tom Hardy took home the Best Actor award for his dual role of Ronnie and Reggie Kray in Legend.
The Best Actress award went to Saoirse Ronan for her performance in Brooklyn. Other acting honours went to Brendan Gleeson as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Suffragette – his second BIFA in a row; and Olivia Colman made it a hat-trick, receiving her third BIFA for Best Supporting Actress in the film The Lobster.
Room was named Best International Film and its young star Jacob Tremblay collected the award along with the production team. Chiwetel Ejiofor was presented with the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution by an Actor to British Film; and Kate Winslet was given the Variety Award, for making a global impact with her work.
