Ian Kilmister, heavy metal pioneer and lead singer of British band Motorhead has died in his home in Los Angeles after a short battle with cancer.

The band, perhaps best known for their 80s anthem “Ace of Spades”, announced the news via their social media account, with the message, “we cannot begin to express our shock and sadness; there aren’t words. Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister. 1945 -2015. Born to lose, lived to win“.

Lemmy was renowned for his gravelly vocal style, excessive alcohol consumption, and cult status in music. He made a cameo appearance in 1994 film Airheads playing himself. The band’s last album Black Magic was released earlier this year.
