Another awards ceremony, another arrow of criticism in the Oscars metaphorical body as more and more awards do what the beleaguered academy cannot or will not do – show diversity in film. The awards ceremony in question this time is the BAFTAs, which is already set to put the Oscars to shame.
Best Film, Actress, Supporting Actress, and Director nominations are all aimed squarely at Todd Hayne’s lesbian love story Carol with Best British film, Best Actress, and Best Actor aimed at Tom Hooper’s transgender drama The Danish Girl. This gives credence to British organisers claim that there is a wider breadth of sexual orientation in London clearly than in Los Angeles, and maybe all of America.
