South African Fashion week began today at The Park at Hyde Park Corner, Johannesburg, with designers showing their Spring/Summer 2016 collection from April 5 to April 9, and the SAFW Fashion Trade Event taking place on April 10 and 11 for press and buyers, before being open to the public from April 12 to April 13.
Opening the show was one of South Africa’s most successful and well known designers Gert-Johan Coetzee. Coetzee is extremely influential and believes in ‘fashion with a conscience’. He dedicates each collection to a social cause and often raises huge media attention from his shows to raise awareness of social issues. He is most well known for his couture red carpet gowns.
Opening day two is 25-year old designer Annimar Honnibal who produces locally made womenswear based in Johannesburg. She won Elle’s Rising Star award in 2012. Honnibal is known for her rustic African twist to fashion. South African Fashion Week continues until the April 13, concluding with the South African Fashion Week Fashion Trade Event at the Centre Court at Hyde Park Corner.
