It’s been a weekend of unfortunate delays for plenty of enticing films, especially those with ‘Silver’ in the title. After Sony removed upcoming female-led superhero film Silver & Black from their release schedule in order to completely re-jig the script, A24 has now decided to push back David Robert Mitchell‘s highly-anticipated follow-up to It Follows, Under The Silver Lake.
Originally scheduled to hit US cinemas in just a few weeks – Friday, June 22 – it will now instead arrive on Friday, December 7. It’s unclear exactly what led to the change, but after its world premiere last month at the Cannes Film Festival, it received mixed reviews. Although many critics praised the film, it perhaps wasn’t deemed the sprawling, Lynchian epic that had previously been promised.
It’s likely that Mitchell will head back to the editing room to re-cut the film, which filmmakers often want to do after underwhelming Cannes debuts. A December release now puts it in direct competition with Oscar hopefuls. Although who knows, maybe the December release helps the film’s own awards potential.
A24 must be confident in the film and the director to allow Mitchell time to re-cut the film, as the studio would likely have preferred a summer release, although it’s possible a film like Under The Silver Lake is a better box office fit in the winter anyway.
Its new release date currently has it competing against Mary Queen Of Scots, which stars Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, plus zombie musical Anna and the Apocalypse. Thanks to Mitchell’s hit with It Follows, Under The Silver Lake has carried a lot of excitement with it.
Pushing it back likely won’t affect that buzz too much, and hopefully the re-cut version delivers the film Mitchell and fans are happier with. The film stars Andrew Garfield, Jimmi Simpson, Topher Grace, Callie Hernandez and Zosia Mamet.
