Barry Howard, star of the BBC sitcom Hi-de-hi has died aged 78. The actor was best known for playing the character of Barry Stuart-Hargreaves in the show, the dance instructor in the summer camp which ran from 1980 until 1986. He later had guest roles as Oliver Barnes in the 2009 Doctor Who Christmas special.
His friend and agent Sharry Clark commented: “The much-loved actor Barry Howard, best known for his exquisitely supercilious Barry Stuart-Hargreaves, the champion ballroom dancer in BBC’s hugely popular Hi-de-Hi, passed away today aged 78”. Clark went on to say that Howard had been suffering from blood cancer for some time.
