Actor Sean Penn arrived in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, yesterday in order to film a documentary about the Russian invasion.
The Russian military offensive began in the early hours of Thursday, and whilst thousands of Ukrainians fled in seek of refuge, the Oscar-winning actor flew into the city to document the situation.
Photographs released yesterday show Penn attending a government press conference in Kyiv. The actor was also seen meeting with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video posted on Zelenskyy’s Instagram 18 hours ago.
The Ukrainian government appear to be in full support of Penn’s work and made a statement expressing their gratitude on the official Ukrainian Presidential Office’s Facebook page yesterday. A translation of the statement reads:
“The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty“.
Penn first visited Ukraine in November 21, 2021, when the situation on the Russo-Ukraine border began to escalate. On his trip, the Hollywood star interviewed the Ukrainian military, local journalists and politicians in preparation for his documentary.
The sixty-one-year-old actor has been involved in other political and humanitarian projects in the past. In 2010, Penn founded the non-profit organisation, CORE, which provided aid to Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake. In 2018 he was reportedly making a documentary in Turkey about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
A release date for the documentary has not been confirmed but NBC have announced that the film is being made in association with Vice Studio Productions.
