Alfre Woodard has signed on to star in Viral, a psychological thriller being helmed by Blair Underwood.
It marks a reunion for the duo, who previously collaborated on Netflix drama Juanita, Showtime’s The Wishing Tree, and stage show Love Letters. They also co-founded Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA) back in 1989, an organization to support the mission to end apartheid.
Underwood is also starring in the film himself. Woodard will play Dr. Johnetta, a psychiatrist specializing in deep trauma, trying to help Underwood’s character Andrew as he falls into paranoia after his wife Jules goes missing. Andrew begins to find his way out of the self-destructive cycle through his new girlfriend Emilia, played by Sarah Silverman.
Woodard has had a long, storied career, winning four Emmys and being nominated for an Oscar. She starred in excellent prison drama Clemency a couple of years ago, earning multiple ‘Best Actress’ nominations at awards shows, and has also been seen in Mississippi Grind, Burning Sands, the Apple TV+ drama See, and voiced a key role in Disney’s live-action remake of The Lion King.
She’ll next be seen in the Kevin Hart comedy-drama Fatherhood, and is currently filming The Gray Man, Netflix’s expensive blockbuster that stars Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. No doubt she’ll be a consummate pro for Viral, which should benefit from her long professional relationship with Underwood.
Production on the film is currently underway in New York.
