Kim Kardashian West is used to being underestimated. But in this month’s Vogue cover story, she opened up about her last pursuit of criminal justice reform, her law studies and her husband, Kanye West‘s bipolar disorder.
The media mogul/beauty entrepreneur/soon-to-be mother of four’s next venture into studying law began at a four-year apprenticeship with a law firm in San Francisco last summer, around the time she played a role in the release from prison of Alice Marie Johnson. She worked with a team of lawyers including activist Van Jones.
The 63-year-old had been in an Alabama prison on a non-violent drug charge since 1996 and Kardashian West visited Donald Trump in the White House to argue her case. The president eventually granted Johnson clemency.
Kim has been working with Jones and attorney Jessica Jackson, co-founders of #cut50, a national bipartisan advocacy group on criminal-justice reform, for months, visiting prisons, petitioning governors and attending meetings at the White House.
Discussing her decision to venture into a law career, she told Vogue: “I had to think long and hard about this. […] The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like, ‘Oh, shit. I need to know more.”
Kardashian West’s interest in the law will see her follow in the footsteps of her father Robert Kardashian (died in 2003), who was a member of OJ Simpson’s defence team.
Kardashian West also talks coping with Kanye’s bipolar disorder and that famous meeting at the Trump White House. “Right now everything is really calm. But we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.” she said.
