Described as “[a] stunning rendition that captures their musical chemistry”, Andrew Bird and Fiona Apple recently performed “backhanded love song” (a.k.a. “Left Handed Kisses”) for the first time on TV. The Ellen DeGeneres Show was the chosen platform for the debut, which featured Apple locking eyes with Bird as the lyrics critique and comment on traditional love songs.
Bird revealed to Rolling Stone that “[m]y inclination was to write a song about why I can’t write a simple love song. The song began as an internal dialogue. At first it was just my voice. Then another voice came creeping in and I thought ‘this should be a duet if I can find the right person'”.
The music video for “Left Handed Kisses” was released on March 14, a piece which showcases a range of powerful emotions. Today’s performance, however, can be viewed below:
