Andy Serkis known to many as a motion capture God has portrayed some of the most interesting and amazing characters through performance capture, to the menacing duality of The Lord of the Rings Gollum, bring wonderful innocence and vulnerability to a giant gorilla in Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and then again portraying a simian as Caesar in the latest Rise of the Plant of the Apes and it’s sequels. He will soon be adding another motion capture creation to his repertoire in Star Wars VII, where he will portray Supreme Leader Snoke.
Very little had been known of Snoke, apart form the fact that he was to be motion capture, is the bid baddy, and it was his voice we heard in the opening of the first trailer. But now Serkis has spoken to Entertainment Weekly and given us some scintillating details as to who Snoke is. ‘Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose’.
Whilst not telling us everything (good, let the fan theories come flooding in) it does give us a genuinely interesting insight into the character, and will hopefully provide us with yet another fantastic Serkis portrayal.
