Angelina Jolie has signed on to star in revenge thriller The Kept, which will be adapted from the novel of the same name by James Scott. Imperative Entertainment, the company behind All The Money In The World, has picked up the rights to the book, and has set Alice Birch (Lady Macbeth) to pen the adaptation.
The film is a period thriller set in the winter of 1897 in New York, and revolves around a woman who returns to her isolated home to discover her husband and four of her children have been murdered. She is shot, before being tended to by her remaining son Caleb, who survived by hiding in the pantry.
With Caleb by her side, she embarks on a gritty journey to find those responsible, but with blizzard conditions enveloping their typically quiet lake town, they will find secrets that test the bond of mother and son.
Jolie hasn’t appeared on screen since 2015’s By The Sea, which she also directed. It’s likely we won’t see her in front of the camera until Disney’s Maleficent 2, which is set for release in 2020. She is also currently shooting Come Away, a drama that reportedly combines Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland, and is directed by Brenda Chapman (Brave).
She’s also lending her voice to hybrid live-action/animated feature The One & Only Ivan, which will be released on Disney’s yet-to-be-released streaming service in 2019.
Thus her signing on to The Kept is a pretty big deal. Considering the amount of scripts that must be offered to Jolie, her picking this one, adapted from an acclaimed novel, is probably a good sign that is has a lot of potential.
