The popular app game Angry Birds has been entertaining and annoying the masses for a number of years, being one of the most popular games for mobile and tablet that we have seen so far. Now your favourite pig-smashing birds have spread around the world into merchandise, copycat apps, apparel and now a feature length film.
The film opened this past weekend with a total of $39 million, placing it at number one on the grossing chart for this week, and number two on the list of successful Video Game Film Adaptations ever, falling shy of the top spot. And so, Simon West‘s 2001 Lara Croft: Tomb Raider defends it’s title of $47 million in its’ opening weekend.
Tomb Raider is the only video game film that has banked over $100 million domestically, and if Angry Birds continues to succeed at this current rate, it may join the popular Angelina Jolie-fronted action film in this ranking.
Also this week, Captain America: Civil War comes in at number two, adding $33 million to its’ grand total of $347 since its’ release three weeks ago. Civil War is the second highest grossing of the year so far, and is looking likely to overtake number one Deadpool by next weekend.
