Captain Marvel duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have found their next project. The duo are set to write and direct Freaky Tales, a new drama in development at eOne and Macro.
The movie is being described as a love letter to the music, movies, sports, politics, places, people, and memories that Fleck grew up with. It will be composed of four interconnected stories set in 1987 Oakland, California.
While ostensibly each story appears to be set in a familiar world, Deadline reports that “the Oakland of Freaky Tales hovers just beyond our knowable universe,” so there might be a slight supernatural or sci-fi edge to the film.
Oakland hip-hop legend Todd Shaw aka Too $hort will also be heavily involved in the project, as he was a big part of the city’s music scene in the 80s and the makers felt it was important to have him. Boden and Fleck reportedly built the script around his music, and Shaw also agreed to executive produce along with his manager David Weintraub.
Though best known for directing Captain Marvel, Boden and Fleck have usually excelled at smaller character pieces like Mississippi Grind and Sugar. Freaky Tales sounds closer to the personal work they’re more comfortable with rather than the stresses of blockbuster filmmaking.
The duo also directed 4 episodes of FX series Mrs. America in 2020, and have also helmed a few episodes of upcoming war drama series Masters of the Air, which is produced by the same companies that made Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
There’s currently no release date set for Freaky Tales.
