Anne Hathaway is in talks to be the star in Sony’s upcoming Barbie film, with Alethea Jones due to direct. Amy Pascal, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce, alongside under executive Richard Dickson, president and COO of Mattel.
Hathaway, who won an Academy Award for Les Miserables (2012), takes over from Amy Schumer in the principal role. If this materialises, Hathaway will play a character who lives in Barbieland and is kicked out for not being perfect enough. She subsequently goes on an adventure in the real world and learns of the value of being free and true to oneself. See female empowerment.
The film is another step in assuring consumers that the Barbie brand is not based on the “unattainable beauty standards” people associate with the dolls. Mattel has evolved the franchise to include people of all colours, jobs and now sizes, to become an inclusive family relatable to children all over the world.
The film currently holds a June 29, 2018 release date, but Hathaway can next be seen in Ocean’s Eight, set for June 8 the same year.
