Apple Original Films continues to expand its slate, and have now secured the rights to the upcoming drama Causeway, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and is being directed by Lila Neugebauer. Lawrence is producing the film alongside A24, who developed the project. The film was titled Red, White & Water until recently.
Also co-starring Brian Tyree Henry, the film is an intimate portrait of a soldier struggling to adjust to her life after returning home to New Orleans. Elizabeth Sanders, Luke Goebel, and Ottessa Moshfegh – whose excellent novel My Year of Rest and Relaxation is being adapted into a film by Yorgos Lanthimos – wrote the screenplay.
This will be Neugebauer’s feature directorial debut after making her name directing theatre and previously helming episodes of The Sex Lives of College Girls, Maid, and Room 104.
This will also mark another collaboration with Apple for Lawrence, as she’s also attached to produce and star in Paolo Sorrentino‘s biopic of Hollywood agent Sue Mengers as well as play disgraced entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes in Adam McKay‘s Bad Blood.
Both of those films are being produced by Justine Ciarrocchi for Excellent Cadaver, Lawrence’s production company.
Lawrence has chosen her projects carefully in recent years, with McKay’s climate change satire Don’t Look Up her only project since 2019, but she’s still a huge star. Apple will be hoping these collaborations make the nascent streamer a second home for her as the film distribution world keeps changing.
Causeway is expected to arrive sometime later this year.
