West Side Story breakout star Ariana DeBose has signed on to star in House of Spoils, a psychological thriller in the works at Amazon and Blumhouse Television.
The film follows a chef who opens a farm-to-table restaurant located on a remote estate. Despite the excitement that comes with any new venture, the chef faces kitchen chaos, a dubious investor, and crushing self-doubt during the first year. But her biggest problem might be the spirit of the former estate owner who haunts the place.
House of Spoils stems from an original idea by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy, who will both write and direct the project. They previously made interesting thriller Blow The Man Down for Amazon.
Julie Rapaport, head of movies at Amazon Studios, said in a statement:
“Since Blow the Man Down, we have been huge fans of Bridget and Danielle’s unique filmmaking voice and knew we needed to be a part of whatever they wanted to do next. Pairing their thrilling script with Ariana’s incredible talent is a dream come true, and we could not be more excited to bring this story to the screen and to our customers around the world.”
DeBose is a seasoned actress, but she recently commanded the spotlight after her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story remake garnered widespread praise and earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first openly queer woman of colour to do so.
She currently has a recurring role on HBO series Westworld, and has superhero film Kraven The Hunter in post-production, as well as sci-fi thriller I.S.S. and Matthew Vaughn‘s spy film Argylle. She recently began filming Poolman, a mystery comedy that will mark Chris Pine‘s directorial debut.
Oscar wins usually result in a post-statue blitz of projects, and DeBose’s upcoming slate of films signal something similar that should keep her in the spotlight with interesting roles.
Production on House of Spoils is expected to begin in the autumn.
