Sony Pictures has reportedly removed El Muerto, the Bad Bunny-starring Spider-Man spinoff movie, from its release schedule. To be directed by Jonas Cuarón, the Columbia Pictures film is set to be the first time a Latino character leads a Marvel live-action film.
Despite initial panicking from fans, this move doesn’t indicate that the film is being completed shelved. The movie remains in development, but that between Bad Bunny‘s hectic tour schedule and the ongoing WGA strike, it makes finalising a release date complicated.
The film had previously been set to hit cinemas on January 12, 2024, but that slot will now be filled by Jeymes Samuel‘s biblical epic The Book of Clarence, which stars LaKeith Stanfield.
That was initially slated to arrive this September. Paul Dano‘s Dumb Money, based on the GameStop saga, will move up one month to fill that September spot.
Sony and Marvel set Cuarón to direct El Muerto last October. At the time, the film was in early development, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penning the script about the titular character who, in Marvel lore, is an antihero and the son of a luchador next in line to inherit the ancestral power of “El Muerto.”
So don’t expect to see El Muerto for a while, but with an international star like Bad Bunny on board a movie connected to the Spider-Man universe, it would behoove Sony to do everything they can to make this project a reality. Waiting a little longer for a likely huge box office taking won’t worry them too much.
