Since her critically acclaimed last album The Altar, released on September 30, 2016, and two years after her last single “Underdog”, BANKS made a comeback with her new single “Gimme” this year, which has garnered six million streams since its release on April 29. Last week, the R&B/Pop singer released the new music video for the track “Gimme”.
In an interview with Rolling Stones, BANKS revealed the meaning behind the song, saying, “Gimme is a song about getting what you want. It’s about knowing what you deserve, saying it out loud, and demanding it with no apologies. I’m ready to release this into the world and begin a new chapter”.
The singer sings on the chorus: “Gimme, gimme, what I want / what I deserve / Gimme, gimme it…”. The lyrics emphasise her determination and her rebirth. The “Better Than Thread” singer also revealed that she has recorded 45 tracks for her upcoming album, which is due to arrive in late 2019. No release date has been announced for the moment.
Directed by Matty Peacock, who has previously worked with the likes of Billie Eilish and Halsey, the video for “Gimme” is both sensual and intriguing, as we see BANKS dancing in the dark, with dreamy imagery fading in and out and laser light flickering in the background. In a press release, the singer revealed that she was also the creative director and the co-editor of the visual, watch it below.
