Bellatrix‘s rise in the music scene has been nothing short of fantastic. The musician first dreamed of becoming a bass-player, only to later become the world’s female champion of beatboxing.
Adding up to the list of things that she can do, the singer has paid her dues with the beatbox group The Boxettes, and has now come into her own with the release of her own music. After singer-songwriter Nao discovered her only SoundCloud upload and decided to cover it, Bellatrix has since undertaken her own musical journey.
The Bristol-born singer is out with a music video for her single “Wish I Could“. Starring actor Luke Treadaway as a wandering Londoner on a drug quest, the video is fragmented in three panels, each sending Cronenberg-ish vibes of unsettlement and confusion, and adorned by a dark scale of colours.
This convulsion, conveyed by the music video, mirrors Bellatrix’s ghost-like vocals, that echo our fears and haunt us, while she sings about the underdogs figures and lost souls of the city. The song’s bassline balances out the more uplifting tone of the chorus and create the right contrast that helps give the track its grotesque garment.
From these first releases, it seems like Bellatrix has clear ideas of where she wants her music to head to. The electronic strains on the bass give her a edgier and more contemporary sound, while her crystal clear voice delivers a vintage vibe that helps create Bellatrix’s unique style.
