Britain’s most successful ever traditional folk act Bellowhead will be celebrating their 10 year anniversary this year and in what better fashion, than with a brand new double A side single entitled “Let Her Run / I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight”, this is of course after releasing their phenomenal new album Revival on the legendary Island Records earlier this summer. Revival landed at #12 in the charts, which is the band’s highest album chart position in their career, so put your party hats on because a birthday celebration is well deserved here!
The new single “Let Her Run” is filled with personality, fun and of course some pounding drums and upbeat horns, and is an intricately reworked and adapted version from the hauling shanty “Let The Bulgine Run”. The video that accompanies the song features the band playing together and it feels like you’re watching an old style music performance with its black and white conviction, and this just emphasizes their raw talents and unique style showing that no fancy video is needed – just great music plain and simple, which is actually quite beautiful. The video also highlights the bands passion, spark and that real connection they have when playing together that brings their music to higher places.
“I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight” is a cover of the Richard & Linda Thompson classic which was also released on Island Records back in 1974. And in the words of vocalist Jon Boden, “I’d done half an arrangement anyway, Then we’re sitting in the Island boardroom and there is a reproduction of the Bright Lights single cover on the wall and it just felt like the perfect choice“, and what a choice it was!
