Ben Mendelsohn & Juliette Binoche To Play Christian Dior & Coco Chanel In Apple Drama Series

Apple TV+ has given a series order to The New Look, a drama that will follow the careers of world renowned fashion designers Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during World War II-era Paris. Ben Mendelsohn and Juliette Binoche have signed on to star.

The series will reportedly be inspired by the true events surrounding Dior’s rise to prominence as a fashion designer, as he ultimately dethrones Chanel’s place at the top of the Paris fashion world with his groundbreaking designs.

But while Dior and Chanel’s influence on the world of fashion is undeniable, to many their legacy is tainted by their involvement in Nazi-occupied France. Channel was a vocal antisemite while Dior first gained prominence by designing dresses for the wives of Nazi officers. Whether these actions will be addressed in the show is currently unknown.

The series is also likely to feature other big names in the world of fashion at the time, like Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Hubert de Givenchy.

Bloodline co-creator Todd A. Kessler will write, direct, and executive produce the series, the first project of a new producing partnership between Kessler and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Mendelsohn previously had an Emmy-winning role on Bloodline, so this is a reunion for him and Kessler. Mendelsohn will next be seen in The Marsh King’s Daughter with Daisy Ridley, and the Marvel Disney+ series Secret Invasion alongside Samuel L. Jackson.

Binoche was most recently seen in French comedy drama How To Be A Good Wife. She’s got Claire Denis‘ romantic drama Fire lined up, while she’ll also be seen in the upcoming HBO Max crime drama, The Staircase.

The New Look is just the latest series order Apple have handed out, having recently given the greenlight to drama Mrs. American Pie, dark comedy Sunny, and a TV adaptation of crime novel Presumed Innocent.

The New Look is expected to begin filming in Paris in the spring.
