Billy Bob Thornton To Star In Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Boomtown’ Series Adaptation ‘Land Man’

Taylor Sheridan already has two hit shows in America with Yellowstone and 1883; he’s aiming for a third. He’s developing a series adaptation of chart-topping podcast Boomtown, which has been retitled Land Man, and has secured Billy Bob Thornton to star. The series will air on Paramount+. MTV Entertainment Studios will produce alongside 101 Studios.

Land Man takes place on the oil fields of West Texas, and focuses on the greed and desperation behind the ‘booms’ that have overwhelmed the landscape of the Lone Star State. The series will feature varying accounts from not only the billionaires surrounding the industry, but also those that are getting down and dirty in the fields.

As the tale unfolds, the series is intending to show just how the oil boom has shaped our current world through climate, economy, and geopolitics.

Sheridan, whose film work also includes writing the screenplays for Sicario, Hell Or High Water, and writing/directing Wind River, reportedly had Thornton in mind when developing the character, so he must be pretty excited that the veteran actor has signed on.

Thornton recently earned a Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Television Drama for his starring role in the final season of Amazon’s Goliath. He previously won for his role in the TV version of Fargo, too.

He recently wrapped filming on Netflix’s upcoming blockbuster The Gray Man, which will star Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas.

Land Man is just the latest, and certainly not the last, series adaptation of a podcast. Previous podcast-to-TV adaptations include mystery series Homecoming, true crime drama Dirty John, comedy 2 Dope Queens, and horror anthology series Lore. We’ll see how this one fares.

With Yellowstone currently serving as one of America’s most watched shows, Paramount likely have high hopes for this latest effort from Sheridan, especially with how, like Yellowstone, it is closely linked to America’s past. Production on the series is expected to begin in 2023.
