When you think Marlon Brando, the first name that immediately comes to mind is Billy Zane, right? If not, that might soon be the case as the actor has signed on to play the Hollywood legend in the indie movie, Waltzing With Brando.
Bill Fishman is writing and directing the film, which is based on a memoir by Bernard Judge, a Los Angeles-based architect whom Brando hired to build the world’s first ecologically perfect retreat on a tiny and uninhabitable Tahitian island.
The story will take place mostly between 1969 and 1974, when Brando and Judge spent time on the remote island as the actor was preparing to star in both The Godfather and Last Tango In Paris.
While names such as Tom Hardy were rumoured for the role, Zane has snagged the part. He’s best known for being the villain in Titanic, and has largely been shut out of mainstream Hollywood since then, best known for cameo appearances in the Zoolander movies and starring alongside Ryan Gosling in 2001’s The Believer.
He previously worked with writer-director Fishman on the 1993 western Posse, so they have experience working together, and perhaps that gave Zane an inside track to the role. Maybe this is the comeback role he has been waiting for. Although it’s unclear how big this project will be, playing someone like Brando is bound to get anyone some attention.
