Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are reuniting! Having starred together on 90s sketch comedy series Mr. Show before briefly reviving it in some form with 2015’s W/ Bob & David, the comedy duo have signed on to star in Paramount+ series Guru Nation.
The show will be a half-hour comedy series that will use a fake documentary format that will see Odenkirk and Cross play rival cult gurus who fight for the hearts and minds of their faithful and deluded followers. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm director Jason Woliner will helm the series.
While Odenkirk and Cross are probably best known for their roles on Breaking Bad and Arrested Development, respectively, they got their start as a comedy duo. Mr. Show never got big ratings, but it has since become a hugely influential part of American sketch comedy, with many that worked on that show going on to become staples of the U.S. comedy landscape.
Having them reunite for Guru Nation should have fans excited, especially because the mockumentary format should allow them to tap into the type of comedy that made them so influential in the first place. Having Woliner’s experience with that format onboard is also a huge plus.
Odenkirk’s brother Bill will also produce, and he also has a long track record of being involved in beloved comedy projects such as The Simpsons, Futurama, and Tenacious D.
There’s plenty of reason to think that Guru Nation has the pieces in place to be a hit, which Paramount+ could really use as they seek to make an impression in the streaming wars.
