It has been 12 years, but a long-awaited third film following the exploits of the unbelievably awkward and equally hilarious Bridget Jones is finally on the horizon: Bridget Jones’s Baby. The star of the film, Renée Zellweger, stopped by The Ellen Degeneres Show to premiere the film’s first trailer on Wednesday’s show and reveal to us what Bridget is up to now.
The answer? Much of the same really. Still clumsy, still awkward, still single.
The happy-ever-after set up at the end of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason hasn’t come to pass. Instead of ending up happily married to Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy, Bridget is once again all by herself (even so, its better than him being dead in Helen Fielding’s Mad About the Boy).
However, her new (ish) single life sees her building a career as a television producer, taking spin classes, rubbing shoulders with Ed Sheeran and having a surprise pregnancy. Who’s the father? Well the obvious candidate would be Mr. Darcy, were it not for Bridget meeting a Mr. Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey) at a music festival.
Bridget Jones’s Baby is directed by Sharon Maguire, the director of the original Bridget Jones’ Diary and features all the old faces that made the first two such a laugh: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Sally Phillips, James Callis, Shirley Henderson, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones. On top of that, Patrick Dempsey, Emma Thompson and Ed Sheeran will round out the cast. Bridget Jones’s Baby will hit cinemas September 16 and you can check out the new trailer below.
