Today marks the release of “Moment,” the evocative second single from baroque-pop singer Gal Musette’s forthcoming album. Exploring the feelings of remorse surrounding loss and the yearning to turn back time, “Moment” builds on the sonic landscape established in her previous track, “Plateau.”
In “Moment,” Gal Musette seamlessly fuses electronic and acoustic music, incorporating acoustic drum samples, mellotron, juno, upright piano, and an abundance of tape echo to create a rich soundscape.
Reflecting on the songwriting process, Gal shares, “I wrote one verse for ‘Moment’ seven years ago but lost the paper with the lyrics on it. Over time, I almost completely forgot the melody… years later, after experiencing a significant personal loss, the lyrics reappeared on a folded piece of paper in my glove compartment, which triggered a memory of the melody and led me to finish the song and begin the process of letting go.”
Hailing from Southern California, Gal Musette is a singer-songwriter whose captivating compositions blend early 1900s French chanson, folk sensibilities, and contemporary instrumentation, resulting in a unique fusion of sounds.
Drawing her moniker from the French waltz-style instrumental music called bal-musette, Gal cites influential artists like Joni Mitchell, Regina Spektor, Björk, Cocteau Twins, Nina Simone, Big Thief, and Laura Marling.
In October 2021, Gal released her debut album, Backwards Lullaby, featuring a vocal duet with one of her main musical inspirations, Rufus Wainwright. The album delves into the anguish of unrequited love, the journey from idealized love to acceptance of reality, and the cyclical nature of life and love in relationships.
Currently, Gal is gearing up for the release of her sophomore album, Pendulum, set for June 2023. Eagerly anticipating her upcoming album, fans can listen to Gal Musette’s enchanting new single, “Moment,” below:
