On May 2, Canadian artist Madalen Duke released her first solo single with CloudKid titled “Talk Back”. It is an unapologetic, bold, empowering song that boasts confidence and swagger, resulting in a record that blends hip-hop and pop while displaying some electronic influences.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Madalen says, “This song is about having confidence in yourself and where you’re going – about being whoever you want to be. We have all grown apart from people in our lives because we evolve, want different things and start aligning different values. Now I’m such a different person than I was four or five years ago, and I know that I have grown and changed for myself, not for others.
Whether it’s a relationship or a friendship, if you don’t grow with me, you’ll get left behind. When you know who you are and where you are going, some people feel uncomfortable with that. ‘Don’t talk back’ in the song means ‘Don’t try to tell me what I can or cannot do’. I’m the one who will write my own story, my own future regardless“.
Madalen Duke is a Vancouver-based artist and songwriter. Fans from her hometown of Canada to Asia and South America have been drawn to her unique voice and empowering lyricism. She has been setting trends and creating a movement with her lustful vocals and honest songwriting.
After opening for Post Malone twice and performing at SXSW twice, she released her debut EP Talking To Myself – with its lead single “Born Alone Die Alone” airing in Netflix’s The Old Guard. Her EP has since been streamed over 10 million times across DSPs.
