Cannes Festival To Open With ‘Annette’ Musical Starring Adam Driver And Marion Cotillard | Film News

The 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will open on July 6 with Leos Carax‘s musical Annette starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, which will also be presented in competition.

As good news never comes alone, a trailer has been unveiled for the occasion. The trailer is intended to give a little more substance to Leos Carax’s comeback, nine years after Holy Motors, which was honored in the Cannes Competition.

This film tells the story of Henry, a stand-up comedian, and Ann, an internationally renowned singer. In the spotlight, they are a glamorous and successful couple, but the birth of their first child, Annette, a mysterious little girl with an exceptional destiny, will change their lives.

The film is based on an original idea by the American duo Sparks, a leading figure in alternative music since the 1970s, who also wrote the film’s soundtrack.

“Every Leos Carax film is an event. And this one delivers on its promises! Annette is the gift that lovers of cinema, music and culture were hoping for, one that we have been yearning for during the past year”, said Pierre Lescure, Cannes Film Festival president.

“We couldn’t have dreamed of a more beautiful reunion with cinema and the silver screen, in the Palais des festivals where films come to assert their splendor,” said Thierry Frémaux, Cannes’ chief. “Carax’s cinema is an expression of these powerful gestures, these mysterious alchemies that makes the secret of cinema’s modernity and eternity,” added Fremaux.

The film will be released in theatres on July 6, the same time as its presentation at the festival. The Cannes festival this year will be presided over by Spike Lee and will take place in Cannes from July 6-17, As for the selected films for this year’s festival, the full selection list will be announced at the end of May.
