The ever elusive, enigmatic Terrence Malick will premiere his new film, Song To Song, in a few weeks at SXSW, but until then news regarding his next film has come to light.
The cast list for WWII drama, Radegund, has been released. Oh, and to give you a example of why Malick is so fiendishly secretive, the film has already wrapped shooting and yet this is the first we’re hearing about the cast. That’s impressive.
The film will star Matthias Schoenaerts, Bruno Ganz, August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Martin Wuttke, Maria Simon, Karin Neuhauser, and Alexander Fehling. Schoenaerts and Ganz have become pretty well established, but the rest of the cast is made up of mostly unknowns, a sharp comparison to Malick’s recent work which has been filled to the brim with stars such as Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Ryan Gosling.
The film is apparently a biopic of Austrian conscientious objector, Franz Jegerstatter: “Told through real wartime letters, this love story finds the couple in conflict with the members of their close-knit town, their church, their government, and even their friends”.
Very little can be taken from such a vague synopsis, but don’t expect a biopic of the traditional kind from Malick. The film is currently in post-production and likely won’t be released until 2018.
