Claire Foy may be best known for playing Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown, but her next project couldn’t be much further from British royalty. Foy has signed on to star in The Pisces, which revolves around a PhD student named Lucy who becomes erotically transfixed and obsessed with a merman.
Just like the source material – Melissa Broder‘s novel of the same name – the film will use Lucy’s desire as an interrogation point for issues of psychosexuality, possession, and gender studies. Broder is on board to co-write the script alongside Gillian Robespierre, who will also direct.
Robespierre has directed two great films starring Jenny Slate over the last few years – Obvious Child and Landline – but those have typically been grounded and emotional comedy-dramas. It will be interesting to see how she adapts to this film, which is already being compared to the Oscar-winning Shape Of Water and recent psychological trip The Lighthouse.
This will be Foy’s first film since 2018 when she had a busy year, starring in The Girl In The Spider’s Web, Unsane, and First Man. Her only other feature film project lined up is Louis Wain, a biographical drama based on the titular artist.
Anne Carey and Amy Nauiokas will produce the film for Archer Gray (Lost Girls), but no other actors have been announced yet, nor is a studio involved. But thanks to the success of the aforementioned Shape Of Water and The Lighthouse, it should only be a matter of time until the film is snapped up by an interested studio.
