Following recent news of major British music venues prohibiting the use of Selfie Sticks – elongated sticks that attach to a camera to aid photo taking – due to health and safety reasons, US festivals such as Coachella and Lollapalooza have now declared that Selfie Sticks will be banned from their sites.
Lollapalooza, which is due to take place in Grant Park, Chicago on July 31st to August 2nd, has dictated on the Frequently Asked Questions section of their website that there should be no “GoPro attachments like sticks, selfie sticks & monopods” and a similar notice has been put on the Coachella site, stating simply that “Selfie sticks / Narcisists are banned from attendance”.
Discussing the problem of selfie sticks with magazine NME, The Academy Music Group, who own O2 Academy Brixton and several other venues stated: “Selfie Sticks are not permitted at Academy Music Group venues. This is in keeping with our existing policy that prohibits the filming and photography during a performance with iPads and other tablet devices and includes any such obstructions for the satisfaction of other customers”.
