You may not know his name yet, but things are set to change next year, as the up and coming stand up Dane Baptiste has landed his very own BBC Three sitcom. Baptiste will write and star in Sunny D, a 4-part series which has been commissioned on the strength of his pilot of the same name, which was showcased as part of the online BBC Comedy Feeds initiative.
Baptiste plays a fictionalised version of himself, still living at home with his parents and argumentative twin sister. He works in a dead-end job for a boss he doesn’t want to end up turning into (played by the Fast Show’s John Thomson). Veteran comedy actor Don Warrington, from the 70’s sitcom Rising Damp, will be returning as Dane’s dad.
By the time that Sunny D airs, BBC Three will be online only. But it’s expected that the sitcom will be repeated on either BBC One or BBC Two, as all BBC Three series will be. The 15 minute-long ‘Sunny D‘ pilot is still available to view online here and it’s funny, so why not check it out?
