It was a risky endeavour that came off because of the dedication of a few individuals and the love of a legion of fans. After raking in the cash and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film in the process, Deadpool has now had its sequel greenlit with Ryan Reynolds to return as the merc with a mouth and Tim Miller to return as director.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shall also be returning to write the screenplay, which shall hopefully be as brilliant as their first. Little is officially known about the sequel at this point, but since when has that stopped hardcore fans from plotting the trajectory of their favourite films? Many are of the opinion that Deadpool will go up against the supervillain Cable in the sequel, but without verification from 20th Century Fox the rumour has little credibility.
The success of Deadpool has led critics to theorise that it could usher in a new era of superhero movies; ones that are directed at an adult audience. There has been talk about the 3rd entry in the spin-off The Wolverine series will be R-rated.
