After his soul mate Kim Porter passed away, Sean “Diddy” Combs and their children have experienced their share of grief and growing pains. And in celebration of Mother’s Day, Essence Magazine decide to put them on the cover. This isn’t so much about him as a single father but more a tribute to Kim Porter.
In the interview, he spoke on what it was like to suddenly be a single father. The mogul shared how his family is dealing in the wake of the death of his long-time partner. So, to honour Kim, he told their story from the beginning. From when she first was a model whose beauty took her from Columbus, Georgia, to New York City in the early nineties.
Diddy (also known as Puffy) had a crush on her when she was working part-time at Uptown Records. Kim and best friends Eboni Elektra and Nicole Johnson were instrumental in promoting talent like Janelle Monáe under the banner of their company, Three Brown Girls. Privately, Kim helped Puff grow into a better man and father.
He also told Essence when she began dating him, she was a single mother. She had Quincy Brown with American singer Al B. Sure!. To Puff, Quincy and his mom came as a package deal.
Diddy reminisces about the day after her death. “She was unforgettable. That day turned my world upside down. Three days before she passed, she wasn’t feeling well. She had the flu, and she sent the kids over to my house so they wouldn’t get sick,” he said.
“One night I was checking on her, and she was like, ‘Puffy, take care of my babies.’ She actually said that to me before she died.” Diddy said that his parenting instinct has gone into overdrive, telling the magazine that he feels compelled to spend more time with his children now that Porter is gone.
“Before this, I was a part-time father, you know? My family was always first, but there are countless times when I chose work over everything else,” he said. “But every day I can hear her telling me to go and spend some time with the kids and make sure everybody’s all right, like she would do. I’m just a lot more present, and, most important, now my kids come before anything else in my life”.
