Disney To Adapt ‘One Thousand And One Nights’ With A Sci-Fi Spin

One Thousand and One Nights, also known as Arabian Nights, is being adapted into a new film at Disney. Arash Amel is reportedly attached to pen the script for an upcoming film that will bring a new science fiction twist to the classic stories.

There aren’t many further details available right now, but we do know that the project will be a live-action original film not tied to any preexisting Disney IP. It’s unclear which of the stories – a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales compiled in Arabic during the Islamic Golden Age – will be adapted.

The studio is familiar with the Arabian Nights tales, as Aladdin was borne out of one of them, and it’s safe to say that – along with its many direct-to-video sequels and recent live-action adaptation – went on to be a pretty big deal, so they’re no doubt hoping for something similar here.

Amel previously collaborated with Disney by penning the screenplay for Rise, based on the life of NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers, which was released exclusively to Disney+ earlier this year. He also previously wrote Netflix film The Titan and biographical drama A Private War.

He’s also attached to write a variety of projects, including Amazon’s Fred & Ginger, the upcoming Jackie Chan/John Cena action film Snafu, Guy Ritchie‘s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and the adaptation of Chris Greenhalgh‘s novel Seducing Ingrid Bergman.

So Amel is in high demand right now, and by the time this movie comes out, he might be an even bigger name in the industry. The film is still in the early stages of development, so expect more information down the line.
