Ed Helms and Taraji P. Henson are teaming up to star in a new Netflix crime comedy called Coffee & Kareem. The film revolves around a cop (Helms) who reluctantly teams with his girlfriend’s (Henson) 11 year-old son to take down the city’s most ruthless criminal.
Michael Dowse (Goon) is directing from a script written by Shane McCarthy. Although the premise might sound wacky, McCarthy’s script was previously voted to the 2014 Black List of best unproduced Hollywood screenplays, so clearly there must be something of comedic value here.
Both stars have found success in comedy, with Helms notably starring in The Hangover trilogy and NBC’s The Office, and was most recently seen in the ensemble comedy, Tag. Henson just starred in the Paramount comedy What Men Want, while director Dowse just finished shooting the Dave Bautista–Kumail Nanjiani road-trip comedy, Stuber, which will be released this summer.
There are plenty of ‘cops team up with unusual partner’ comedies from the past, including Turner & Hooch and Cop And A Half. These kinds of films can work, but when they miss, they miss hard. But hopefully with a solid cast and director lined up, Coffee & Kareem can be the sort of fun comedy that fits perfectly on Netflix’s platform.
