Emily Blunt is not one to shy away from a challenge, or a battle. Having trained with the FBI, Blunt is more than capable of holding her own in intense situations – and she knows how to take a hit. The actress has with recent roles become a budding action star and is more than happy to have contributed to a new wave of badass roles for women. But in a recent interview, Blunt revealed that her previous cinematic outings pale in comparison to her next project The Girl on the Train which she describes as “the most challenging thing I’ve ever done”.
Chatting with Deadline, Blunt spoke about what draw her to the story, and why she likes portraying “damaged women”. “I just love that it’s about addiction and loneliness and voyeurism and what we think we see and don’t see”. She said. “I think it’s very relatable. We’ve all ridden the train to work and wondered about the lives of the people on the train, and I think that people relate to that”.
The Girl on the Train is based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins, and sees Blunt as Rachel Watson – a woman struggling with a painful divorce and alcohol addiction. On her daily commute, she forms a fictional relationship with a couple she sees from the train window. Until one day, havoc befalls the couple and she becomes entangled with the mystery that follows.
“I love that your heroine, your lead character is the most unreliable witness in the world because she’s a drunk”. She continued. “And yet she’s right, and nobody believes her. The idea of playing a part like that where you just feel like you’re drowning is exciting. I’ve never played a blackout drunk before, so this is new to me now”. The film also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennet, Justin Theroux, Allison Janney, Luke Evans, Lisa Kudrow and Edgar Ramirez. The Girl on the Train is due for release on October 7, 2016.
