Todd Solondz‘s Welcome to the Dollhouse was a coming of age movie where no one really came of age. Regardless of Dawn Wiener’s endless high-school traumas – a psychotic bully constantly threatening to rape her, the ubiquitous nickname Wiener-Dog chasing her through classrooms, the abduction of her young sister by a local pervert – by the narrative’s close, our protagonist is in no better situation than she began, and has learnt very little about the chaos of life for her troubles. With Wiener-Dog, independent American director will return his 1995 cult movie, and we will finally see what the universe has in store for Dawn after school comes to a close. With Heather Matarazzo replaced by Greta Gerwig in the title role, the film will be a kind of road-movie, involving Dawn, a dachshund, and a host of bizarre (and no doubt unlikable) characters who cross their path. Kieran Culkin, Ellen Burstyn, Danny Devito, Tracy Letts and Zosia Mamet will also star, with Wiener-Dog set for release next year. Check out the first image of Gerwig as Dawn below:
Maybe finally Dawn has caught a break, though from that t-shirt I’m guessing we should keep our expectations low.
