The first trailer has arrived for the upcoming Disney+ film, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. Yes, that’s the title. It’s an adaptation of Stephan Pastis‘s children’s book series, which started with the title of the same name. Spotlight director Tom McCarthy is at the helm, and wrote the script alongside Pastis.
The film revolves around the title character, who operates a detective agency with a polar bear. Set in the very quirky and very fitting setting of Portland, Oregon, the film looks like a mix between the kids films you avoid, and the ones that resonate for life. Obviously it’s hard to tell from the trailer which this may be, but tonally it looks like a fun, emotional rollercoaster.
McCarthy’s involvement is a curious one, but not surprising when you look back upon his career. While he’s won an Oscar for Spotlight and has directed several independent features such as The Station Agent and Win Win, he’s always had an affinity for more kid-centric films.
He co-wrote Up, wrote the Disney film Million Dollar Arm, and one of his most bizarre films is The Cobbler, which revolves around a pair of magical shoes. Hopefully this film is a lot more like Up, and a lot less like The Cobbler, which was critically panned.
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made will screen at the Sundance Film Festival later this month, before it hits Disney+ on Friday, February 7.
