Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for the upcoming comedy, Night School, set to star Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. The film revolves around a man who must go back to school to get his GED in order to secure a job as a financial analyst.
What’s most exciting is that the film comes from director Malcolm D. Lee, who helmed the breakout comedy hit Girls Trip last year, which was probably the funniest film of 2017 and introduced most of us to Haddish in a breakout role that even got some Oscar buzz. The trailer for Night School is below:
It’s always hard to judge comedy trailers, as the funniest ones often end up using the only good jokes of the film, while sometimes a weak trailer masks a funny, character-driven comedy that’s lacking easy jokes that can be showcased in a brief clip. Hart has a writing credit on this one, which marks his first screenplay credit outside of his standup specials.
The appeal of Night School is clearly the chemistry of Hart and Haddish, and while expecting something as good as Girls Trip might be a little naive, this is sure to be pretty enjoyable, at least. The film was actually put together before Girls Trip was released, before Haddish became a star, meaning Universal lucked into having another Haddish-fronted comedy straight away.
The film also stars Ben Schwartz, Taran Killam, Rob Riggle and Romany Malco. Night School hits cinemas Friday, September 28.
