Netflix has released the first trailer, along with a release date, for their upcoming sci-fi series, Altered Carbon. Although the streaming giant doesn’t release numbers in regards to their content – whether viewing numbers or how much their projects cost to make – the series is expected to surpass The Crown as the most expensive series Netflix has produced.
Altered Carbon takes place 500 days in the future, where human consciousness can be uploaded to something called a ‘cordial stack’, allowing the rich to change bodies constantly and thereby live forever. There are characters for and against this process, while there’s also a murder mystery. The trailer is below.
This is a pretty perfect time to drop the trailer, as the world contained within the series has a strong Blade Runner vibe (though 2049 didn’t do too well at the box office, so who knows if that’s even something audiences want anymore). It’s certainly easy to see the expensive budget on screen.
The series is based on the 2002 novel by Richard K. Morgan, and is being adapted by Laeta Kalogridis and director Miguel Sapochnik. The series stars Joel Kinnaman, James Purefoy and Renee Elise Goldsberry. Altered Carbon will debut on all Netflix territories on February 2, 2018.
