Tina Fey is an action hero – well almost. She is nonetheless a hero, in every sense of the word. As Sisters prepares to face Star Wars head on, Paramount has released the first trailer for Fey’s upcoming exploit Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Don’t fret, it’s a comedy – as the rather quirky title suggests. Just a darker one. Which sees Fey getting her hands dirty on the front lines in Afghanistan.
Fey is a comedic genius in her own right, and is more than capable of headlining a film. But we rarely find her at the focal point of her own film or show. She is often paired up with another talent, like her longtime friend Amy Poehler, or a part of a much bigger ensemble. That is why this film is so intriguing, and it also shows a different side to her and gives her the chance to test new things – like guns.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is based on the memoir The Taliban Shuffle by former Chicago Tribune reporter Kim Barker, who wrote about her time as a reporter in Afghanistan in 2004. Fey plays Barker who goes to Afghanistan because she “wanted out of my job, wanted out of my mildly depressive boyfriend, just wanted to blow everything up”. The whole premise seems to be about the search for love, friendship and happiness, think Eat Pray Love but set in a war-zone. Well, I’m in, this looks like good-hearted and clever entertainment.
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (the men who gave us Crazy, Stupid, Love and Bad Santa). The film has also got a stellar cast; Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Christopher Abbott, Alfred Molina, and Billy Bob Thornton – which really seals the deal. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is currently slated for a March 4, 2016 release. Watch the trailer below, and enjoy!
