FKA Twigs has opened up about her upcoming album called Magdalene. The long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s LP1 is due for release before the end of this year.
In her first interview with i-D, the first one in almost three years, the artist said her forthcoming LP is about “every lover” she’s had and ever will have. The album was recorded in London, New York and Los Angeles and co-produced by Nicolas Jaar.
FKA Twigs started working on Magdalene three years ago, when she “indulged in a period of solitude, taking to wearing long medieval dresses and wandering around by herself”.
“I was in a sad place, mentally, and I didn’t want to come out of it”, she told the magazine “I don’t have many friends there, and wasn’t communicating with my friends or family here. I just went and locked myself off”.
Describing the sound of her new record, the artist said: “Just when you think it’s really fragile and about to fall apart, there’s an absolute defiance and strength in a way that my work’s never had before. It’s really fragile. I made it at a time when I was in recovery – physically and emotionally – and I think that comes through”.
Since her critically acclaimed debut album released in 2014, FKA Twigs has been recovering from a health condition. Earlier this year, she shared the single “Cellophane” featured on her upcoming album.
