The xXx films, starring Vin Diesel as Xander Cage and combining macho action, heavy metal and large scale stunts, seems like an antiquated franchise that remains a microcosm for the oddities of the early 2000s culture. Some would say it deserves to remain in the past, but following last year’s xXx: Return Of Xander Cage, a fourth film is set to be given the go ahead.
Although the recent film didn’t perform too mightily at the domestic box office, it performed much better overseas. Diesel originally mentioned at the premiere that Paramount had asked him about a potential fourth instalment, and a new report mentions Los Angeles-based H Collective is set to bankroll the next film in the franchise.
Joe Roth, one of the producers on the last film, had this to say: “In today’s Hollywood, it requires strong partners to produce and finance such big-budget movies as the xXx series, and The H Collective is a welcome and exciting new company that we look forward to working with.”
Very little is known about the sequel yet, but reportedly much of the cast of the previous film will return, with D.J. Caruso set to direct again.
The movie business can be strange some times. An odd franchise like xXx, which doesn’t ostensibly have a large demographic to reel in big box office numbers and seems to be permanently trying to emulate the Steven Seagal/Jean-Claude Van Damme action fest of the 80s and 90s, is now set to have a third sequel, while more original and creative ideas never even get to production. Don’t try to understand it.
